Earthquakes of Southern California

The recent news of the two earthquakes in southern California got me thinking, am I prepared? Well, the answer to that is a resounding, no. I reviewed the kit materials here and initially decided that would be sufficient for any and all possible scenarios. Alas, I was wrong. I have discovered that while the ready.gov kit is a good start, there is another one that is much better. This is the official blog of the centers for disease control (CDC) and they have a Zombie apocalypse kit list. They figured if you are prepared for a zombie outbreak you should be able to easily handle other issues such as this.

Anyway people, I am just saying that while zombies and geology do not go hand in hand it is never a bad idea to be prepared.

Trilobites!

Very Well Preserved Trilobite

For my first blog entry I give you this!

This is a picture of a trilobite from the Devonian period ~400 m.a.

Posted is a link to the New York Times article discussing the nature of this and other variations of its family.
This is absolutely the most stunning photograph of a trilobite I have seen. I know from other fossils what the general shape of these creatures were but who knew they looked like something straight out of the "Alien" movies. Just look at those freaky spine attaching arm things!
